This Lilac Octopus was born in May 2023 and is primarily dedicated to raising awareness about the impacts of deep-sea mining. The issue is personally close to her heart, as her species inhabits the seabed, and thus protesting against ocean floor mining is an effort to save her own home. She participated in her first protest in July 2023 outside the Department of Commerce in the Czech Republic, where she urged the Department to support a moratorium on deep-sea mining at a meeting of the Seabed Authority. She also went directly to Kingston, Jamaica, where the authorities there were deciding on issuing the first drilling licence. She has so far managed to delay the threat of destruction to her home ecosystems. Today, she continues to travel the world tirelessly, trying to persuade governments to declare a moratorium on deep-sea mining.
The Lilac Octopus aka Casper or Ghost Octopus was first spotted in 2016 in the Pacific Ocean in the waters off Hawaii. Not much is known about this species, and it doesn't even have a scientific name yet; the Czech one – Lilac Octopus – was coined by Greenpeace supporters. We do know, however, that the seabed, which is home to these animals, may be irreversibly devastated and rendered uninhabitable by deep-sea mining.
